Another shout-out to TUG! “The Unusual Guests” started as a two-piece duo and has morphed into a five-piece group of friends with a true passion for music. Featuring Rich V, the “General Mayhem Coordinator,” on guitar/vocals; Cathleen (Cat) K, the “Cool Cat,” on bass/vocals; Karen B, the “Effervescent Presence,” on keys/vocals; Erik B, the “Riff Meister,” on guitar/vocals; and Gordon B, the “Quality Engineer,” on drums/vocals, they have been playing all over the area and have a full schedule of events through the end of the year.
This band delivers on harmonies and mixes it up with a plethora of instruments—you never know what you might see, from ukulele and harmonica to wind and brass sounds. They’re also known to bring up “Guest” performers to keep things lively. Two fall guitar shows are coming up in the area. First up is “The Best Guitar Show” on October 13th, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Quality Inn, 300 Tarentum Bridge Road, New Kensington, PA. There is a $10 admission fee, which includes door prizes. This is a Buy-Sell-Trade event, and if you’d like to get a table, call (814) 215-4087. This is a great place to find that deal you’ve been looking for—not the internet deals, but the “REAL DEALS.”
Next up is “The Great American Guitar Show,” happening November 2nd (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and November 3rd (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, 100 Station Ave, Phoenixville, PA. With hundreds of dealers, collectors, and manufacturers, and thousands of instruments—both new, used, and vintage—guitars, amps, effects, and anything else guitar-related you can think of, this is another show you don’t want to miss. Make plans now, because both shows will be over before you know it, and you’ll be left scanning the marketplace for the same stuff over and over again. You never know what you’ll find at these shows, so get out there and add to your collection. Check out both ads in this issue.
Well, I’m running out of time and space, so I’ll close with something interesting. “Spin” magazine sent me an email out of the blue today. I’ve never received one before, so it seemed odd. It turns out they are back in the printing business after a decade away from print! They decided it was time for a comeback. It seems they are offering monthly subscriptions again and plan to keep printing. The first issue back in print will feature “Lainey Wilson”—such a beautiful voice. I think it’s great news for all “print” resources, and I wish them the best. I hope the trend of people picking up something other than a phone is on the rise.
