Editor Josh Noll
Welcome one and welcome all to another issue of PA Musician Magazine! It was just a short 8 years ago that I became editor-in-chief of this paper, taking over the family legacy and continuing what my father and mother had started way back in 1982.
People ask… am I a music buff? No. Am I a graphic designer? No. How about a photographer? Nope. Well, at least you’re a writer? Nope, not that either. When asked as a kid what I wanted to be, the answer was always a carpenter. That sorta happened—more of a wood butcher/fixit man. If it’s broke, I’ll try to fix it before I give up and throw it away. Old things that grab my interest—things with wheels, wings, and motors. How do things tick? What makes them go around? When I started that first month 8 years ago, I was really trying to figure out how this works—and can I fix it? Can I make it work and survive? It’s been an interesting ride that I’m on, and it’s amazing to see the continued support from the local music scene.
Printing a paper about the local music scene in a digital world seems pointless to some people, but to me it’s more about capturing the moments and keeping print alive. Generations of musicians chronicled every month for over 40 years—not many local scenes have that. I love what I do and thank everyone who has helped along the way—readers, advertisers, my delivery team and print crew, my mother, and of course the writers Rachel Rocks, Jim Price, Chris Rider, and Eric Hoffman—who hit the deadline each month. It’s a family, and I rely on them each month to make it work. Without one spoke in the wheel,
the whole thing goes out of line and we stray off course. MUCH LOVE TO YOU ALL.
Another music-loving, family-friendly small business— Deer Run Camping Resort—is at it again. It’s time for the Smore Jam Music Festival, May 28–29–30. Three days of live country music starting on Thursday the 28th with Wessley Spangler at 8pm. The beautiful Corina Rose and Red Flag Radio on Friday, with music starting at 6pm. Kicking off Saturday at noon, it’s Wyatt Becker Band, followed by Jake Mach, Gillion Smith Band, Harmony Holler Band, and Chris Woodward & Shindiggin, with DJ Lars line dancing in between sets to keep the boots warm. Production by TGM Sound Productions. From what I gather, lots of graham and marshmallow go into this event—some sort of monster S’more? Get down there and find out for yourself. Indulge in some camping or just go check out the music. This event is open to the public, so no need to camp—but I’d recommend some lawn chairs and maybe some hot dog sticks at least. Check out the flyer in this issue for more details.
Well, that’s it for this month. If you would like to help us make it to 50 years (or 15 years for me), please consider advertising. We have rates for all budgets, and they include the same perks. It’s very easy—so easy, in fact, an old wood butcher could figure it out. We talk in inches around here—none of this pica stuff, or points-per-inch something or other. We keep it simple. Just send me an email at joshnoll@pamusician.net or give me a ring or text at 717-636-4203. Please leave a message so I can weed out the scamming types. Take care, music lovers—be safe and enjoy life.
